This week, Representative John James (MI-10) introduced the bipartisan Road to Recovery Act to reauthorize lifesaving resources vital to addressing opioid addiction and substance abuse across the country.

Rep. James issued the following statement upon introducing the legislation:

“Opioid addiction impacts communities all across America, but especially the communities in Michigan’s 10th Congressional District. It’s left a trail of destruction, heartbreak, and broken families in its wake,” said James. “Americans caught in the trap of addiction need our help and support. The Road to Recovery Act is vital to further securing the necessary funding, resources, and infrastructure we need to fight the crisis of over-prescription and abuse of opioids in the U.S.”

Rep. Tony Cardenas (CA-29), the Democrat lead for this legislation, also released a statement after the bill’s introduction:

“Our country is confronting a devastating substance use disorder and addiction crisis,” said Cardenas. "This bill invests in key programs that fund community organizations and peer support groups that provide care for individuals on the path to recovery. I am proud to join Rep. James to ensure peer supporters and community care providers have the resources they need to provide high-quality, compassionate care to everyone who needs it."

The Road to Recovery Act reauthorizes Section 7152 of the SUPPORT Act. Section 7152 provides critical resources for SAMHSA’s National Helpline, a free, confidential, 24/7, 365-day-a-year treatment referral and information service for individuals and families facing mental and/or substance use disorders. This service provides referrals to local treatment facilities, support groups, and community-based organizations.
