STERLING HEIGHTS, MI – Today, Rep. John James (MI-10) met with school administrators, law enforcement officers, prosecutors, and community leaders from both sides of the aisle for a conversation on school safety. The discussion focused on working through possible solutions at the local, county, state, and federal level to ensure our schools and children can pursue their education in a safe and secure environment, without the worry of harm or violence.

Rep. James released the following statement following the meeting:

“As the father of three school-aged boys, the issue of school safety is extremely personal to me. Like many parents, I worry for our kids’ well-being every day,” James said. “As a congressman, I’ve taken several steps to address the root causes of these tragedies as well as practical deterrence strategies. But we must do more, which is why I’m grateful for today’s productive conversation and the input from those who attended. I look forward to continuing my work with these local leaders so that together, we can prevent the heinous tragedies that have become far too regular.”

In addition to hosting the roundtable, Rep. James has advocated to boost funding for the STOP (Students, Teachers, and Officers Preventing) School Violence Act for Fiscal Year 2024. He also co-sponsored the School Guardian Act which creates a block grant program administered by the U.S. Attorney General to provide federal funding to support the placement of law enforcement personnel at every K-12 school in the nation. Finally, Rep. James is considering leading an effort similar to legislation in the Senate called the “Protecting Kids on Social Media Act,” which would target minors’ social media habits, a leading cause of dangerous mental health decay among our youth.
