As the fight continues on Capitol Hill to avoid a government shutdown, Rep. John James (MI-10) is announcing that if Congress is unable to come to an agreement by the end of the month, he will donate his salary during a potential government shutdown.

His decision comes on the heels of his “Money Where Our Mouths Are Act,” which he recently introduced to block politicians from continuing to collect checks in the event of a government shutdown.

James issued the following statement regarding this matter:

“Our salaries are funded by hardworking taxpayers. If we fail to do the job we were elected to do and work within our majority to fund the government, I cannot in good conscience accept payment. We owe it to Americans to be good stewards of their money, and I intend to uphold that commitment.  That’s why I introduced my ‘Money Where Our Mouths Are Act,’ and it’s why I’ve chosen to donate my pay,” James said. “In the meantime, I look forward to continuing my efforts to advance a fiscally responsible funding package while avoiding a government shutdown. Such a package should include federal funding at a lower spending level, the creation of a commission to address long term debt, and language to secure our borders—as was included in H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act.”
