Today, Representative John James (MI-10) joined a majority of his colleagues in the House of Representatives to pass his Disclose GIFTs (Getting Investments in Foreign Transactions) Act. The Disclose GIFTS Act, which was included in Rep. Michelle Steel’s DETERRENT Act, would require departments at colleges and universities to report gifts and contracts from foreign nations of concern. The gift reporting requirements are aligned with the same standards that bind members of Congress. Institutions would be required to upload these disclosures on a publicly available and searchable database.

“The Chinese Communist Party has been playing the long game. They know that growing their influence in America in subtle but powerful ways is more effective than traditional warfare, and academia has been a target-rich environment,” James said. “Requiring our higher learning institutions to disclose nefarious sources of income isn’t just common sense; it’s national security. I’m grateful to work with my friend Rep. Steel in getting my bill passed and urge my colleagues in the Senate to do the same.”
