Today, the House passed Representative John James’ (MI-10) Road to Recovery Act, which reauthorizes lifesaving resources vital to addressing opioid addiction and substance abuse across the country. The Road to Recovery Act is the third bill sponsored by Rep. James to pass the House of Representatives. The bill was included in the Support for Patients and Communities Reauthorization Act, which assists communities fighting substance use and abuse.

Rep. James issued the following statement upon passage of this legislation:

“Opioids have taken a toll on Americans all over the country but especially states like Michigan. I’m grateful that my colleagues on both sides of the aisle could come together in getting individuals the help they need,” said James. “With the holidays upon us, those already struggling with addiction may face increased isolation and depression. The Road to Recovery Act provides essential funding, support, and treatment so that no American suffers alone.”

The Road to Recovery Act reauthorizes Section 7152 of the SUPPORT Act. Section 7152 provides critical resources for SAMHSA’s National Helpline, a free, confidential, 24/7, 365-day-a-year treatment referral and information service for individuals and families facing mental and/or substance use disorders. This service provides referrals to local treatment facilities, support groups, and community-based organizations.

The Road to Recovery Act now moves to the Senate for consideration where it is expected to pass and move to the President’s desk.
