Today, Representative John James (MI-10) signed onto a Supreme Court amicus brief led by House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) and Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas). The case, Donald J. Trump v. Norma Anderson, et al., addresses the question of whether former President Donald Trump should remain on the ballot in Colorado. The case comes after the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that Trump should be removed despite being the likely Republican nominee for president.

The signatories argue that the Colorado court “raced past numerous textual and structural limitations … which are primarily designed to ensure that Congress controls the enforcement and removal” of a president from office, and that the court “adopted a malleable and expansive view of ‘engage in insurrection,’” which will no doubt be abused and weaponized against political enemies by whichever party is in power. The legislators call on the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse the Colorado court’s decision.

Rep. James issued the following statement following the brief’s release:

“Left-wing legal hypocrites, who have been criticizing threats to 'our democracy' for the past six years, have ironically removed the leading candidate of a major political party from the ballot in Colorado,” James said. “Comrade Putin would be proud of them. Even the leftist California governor, in reference to Colorado’s blatant attempt to unconstitutionally disenfranchise millions of Americans with whom they disagree, said ‘we defeat candidates at the polls. Everything else is a distraction.’ In Michigan, we rejected similar unconstitutional shenanigans. The Supreme Court will strike down this unconstitutional action by deranged communists and America will veto Joe Biden in November.”

In addition to James, Scalise, and Cruz, 134 other House Republicans as well as Speaker Mike Johnson and 41 other Senate Republicans signed onto the amicus brief.
