John James to Refuse Salary During Government Shutdown

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Following the government shutdown, Rep. John James (MI-10) authored a letter asking for his salary to be withheld for the duration of the shutdown.

With Rep. James’ support, House Republicans passed a continuing resolution to keep the government open and operating. In an attempt to push through a $1.5 trillion spending increase, including extreme policies like free taxpayer funded healthcare for illegal immigrants, Democrats opted to shut down the government, causing what many are calling the “Schumer Shutdown.”

During the Schumer Shutdown, payment for service-members, federal law enforcement officers, air traffic controllers, WIC and food assistance, and more will be delayed.

In the 118th Congress, Rep. James introduced the “Money Where Our Mouths Are Act,” which would have blocked politicians from continuing to collect checks in the event of a government shutdown.

Rep. James issued the following statement regarding the shutdown:

“House Republicans did our job–two weeks ago. We passed a clean, nonpartisan, good faith spending bill to keep the government open. This was a short-term extension of our bipartisan agreement earlier in the year intended to give all parties sufficient time to continue negotiations over the next 7-weeks.

At a time when working Americans are still reeling from four years of Bidenflation, Democrats chose to hold the government hostage and extort the American people for an additional 1.5 trillion-dollar, taxpayer funded healthcare giveaway to illegal immigrants and to greedy insurance companies. Sadly, our public servants and neighbors in need are regarded as pawns to a Democrat party that seems to care more about “standing up to Trump” than standing up for you!

I urge my Democrat colleagues to end the Schumer Shutdown; it’s not too late to do the right thing. In the meantime, while I will not be taking a Congressional paycheck during the Schumer Shutdown, my offices will remain open to serve our amazing constituents in Michigan’s 10th Congressional District.”
