John James Signs Letter Urging Pay for Law Enforcement Officers During Schumer Shutdown

WASHINGTON, D.C. - This week, Rep. John James (MI-10) signed a letter, alongside seven House Republicans, asking the Director of the Office of Management and Budget to ensure pay for federal law enforcement personnel during the government shutdown.

During a lapse in federal appropriations, federal law enforcement officers across the nation are required to work without receiving a paycheck. On October 15th, President Trump signed an order directing the Secretary of War to ensure active-duty U.S. military personnel receive their paychecks.

But still, federal law enforcement officers including Border Patrol, ICE agents, CBP officers, DEA, Secret Service, Federal Air Marshals, Transportation Security Officers, and more are having to work without pay.

The letter condemns the Democrat shutdown and calls on them to end their “political games” that are causing uncertainty over law enforcement pay. On September 19th, House Republicans, with Rep. James’ support, passed a clean continuing resolution that would have kept the government open. Senate Democrats have repeatedly rejected this nonpartisan measure, opting to shut down the government, disrupt services for families on WIC, Head Start, food assistance, and force federal law enforcement officers to work without pay.

The letter states:

“we stand ready to work with the Trump Administration and our Colleagues in Congress to ensure the success and implementation of a temporary measure to pay our federal law enforcement officers. Paying our troops was the right call—and paying our homeland defenders and law enforcement should be next. Thank you for your attention to this important matter.”
