John James Pens Letter to the Army Advocating for AH-64E Apache Helicopter Mission at Selfridge Air National Guard Base

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 30, 2024 | Noah Sadlier (202-225-4961)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman John James (MI-10) sent a letter to the Secretary of the Army, Christine Wormuth, and the Army Chief of Staff, General Randy George, advocating for Selfridge Air National Guard Base to receive an AH-64E Apache helicopter mission.

The letter states:

“Currently, Selfridge is home to the 127th Wing, which is composed of a squadron of A-10s and 12 KC-135 Stratotankers but will soon welcome new KC-46As. The base hosts other services to include an ARNG unit of CH-47 Chinooks, the U.S. Coast Guard Detroit Air Station, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Border Patrol Detroit Sector, Navy Reserve Center-Detroit, and the 1st Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, among others. Selfridge is also located in Harrison Township, one of the most patriotic and supportive communities that has cared for the base throughout its historic milestones.

Our delegation, in a bipartisan and bicameral manner, has advocated tirelessly for Selfridge from the basing of a future fighter mission to taking care of the men and women that serve on the base. As a former Apache helicopter pilot that flew AH-64s during Operation Iraqi Freedom, I believe that this base has the capacity to support this mission, in both Michigan and its deployment overseas.”

Rep. James issued the following statement regarding the letter:

“Growing Michigan’s economy and strengthening national security are among my top priorities. There is no better way to serve both than by investing in the Arsenal of Innovation and Selfridge Air National Guard Base. As a former Ranger-qualified Apache helicopter pilot who flew over 750 combat hours during Operation Iraqi Freedom, I can’t imagine a better aircraft to serve and protect the upper Midwest and our Great Lakes than AH-64 Apache helicopters,” said James. “I fully intend to continue my efforts to bring a new fighter mission to Selfridge Air National Guard Base, but bringing Apache helicopters would both serve our local economy and national security.”
