Rep. James Resolution Pushing Back on Biden Administration’s EV Mandates Passes House; Seventh Legislative Item to Pass House

WASHINGTON, D.C., September 20, 2024 | Noah Sadlier (202-225-4961)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representative John James’ (MI-10) Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution passed the U.S. House of Representatives with bipartisan support.

Following the vote, Rep. James issued the following statement:

“Michigan is not afraid of the future, but we demand to be a part of it. The Biden-Harris Administration’s EPA tailpipe emission rule is another out-of-touch regulation that will crater the Michigan auto industry and decimate our middle-class, and most vulnerable. Folks in my district simply can’t afford to spend an additional $12,000 on an expensive, unreliable EV. I’ve always said, if you want an EV, get an EV. But allowing the Biden-Harris Administration to continue stifling consumer choice will only harm the American people,” said James. “This is a de-facto electric vehicle mandate that will put all 77,580 manufacturing jobs in MI-10 at great risk of extinction. I am grateful that the House passed this measure to prevent the Biden-Harris Administration’s rule from ravaging the livelihoods of thousands in Michigan and across the country. The Senate must take up this measure immediately.”

Speaker Mike Johnson also issued the following statement after final passage:

“The EPA’s so-called ‘rule’ creates a de facto electric vehicle mandate that is not only misguided but also detrimental to American consumers. By setting emission standards that only electric vehicles can meet, this rule effectively picks winners and losers in the marketplace. The radical agenda of the Biden-Harris Administration continues to overregulate our free market, and this latest move is yet another attempt to dictate what kinds of vehicles Americans can buy,” Speaker Johnson said. “Congress has a duty to step in and protect the rights of consumers. I commend Rep. James for taking steps to reject this overreach and restore choice and competition in the automotive market.”

Commending Rep. James for his efforts on this important issue, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise issued the following statement as well:

“Vice President Harris made it clear from the start that one of her top priorities is mandating electric vehicles and getting rid of combustion engines, and like she said, her values haven’t changed. The Biden-Harris EPA continues to place extreme standards on pollutants and greenhouse gasses for vehicles in an attempt to make Americans to switch to EVs, taking away consumer choice, forcing unaffordable options on American families and workers, and crushing jobs,” said Majority Leader Steve Scalise. “Rep. John James has seen first hand the devastation of these horrible policies coming out of the Biden-Harris Administration in his home state of Michigan, and I commend him for bringing a bill to reverse the EPA’s disastrous mandate on tailpipe emissions and stand up for hardworking Americans.”
