John James Leads Delegation Letter to Stellantis Demanding Answers for Warren Layoffs

WASHINGTON, D.C., September 24, 2024 | Noah Sadlier (202-225-4961)

Today, Representative John James (MI-10) and members of the Michigan congressional delegation sent a letter to Carlos Tavares, the CEO of Stellantis, requesting more information on their decision to layoff 2,450 Michigan auto workers. This decision comes in the wake of a recent tailpipe emissions standard rule from the Biden-Harris Administration’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Rep. James’ Congressional Review Act (CRA) to nullify this Biden-Harris EPA rule passed the House with bipartisan support last week.

The letter states:

“On August 10th of this year, Stellantis announced it would lay off 2,450 workers — an entire shift — at the Ram 1500 Classic assembly plant in Warren, MI. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case but part of a broader trend. Michigan has been hemorrhaging automotive jobs for decades, with employment in the state’s auto plants, parts factories, and corporate offices shrinking by 35% since 1990. This decline has been driven by jobs moving to Mexico due to NAFTA, and to southern states like South Carolina, Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Georgia; which offer more favorable tax, tort, and regulatory environments for investors, businesses, workers and taxpayers to share benefit.”

Rep. James issued the following statement regarding the letter:

“As a former business leader who ran an automotive supply chain company, I understand the auto industry intimately. Consumers, not bureaucrats, should have choice over what vehicles they purchase. The comply-or-die EV mandates being pushed by Kamala Harris and Joe Biden are having real, devastating consequences in my district, including layoffs of 2,450 Stellantis workers in Warren, MI. These policies which put activists over auto workers has no place in our politics. I will never give up fighting for workers in my district.”
