John James Reintroduces the Reignite Hope Act to the 119th Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C., January 28, 2025 | Noah Sadlier (202-225-4961)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representative John James (MI-10) reintroduced the Reignite Hope Act to the U.S. House of Representatives. The bill amends the current IRS tax code to establish a credit for employees of critical industries and makes permanent certain expiring provisions relating to the child tax credit. Representative Juan Ciscomani (AZ-06) is an original co-sponsor of the bill, as he was last Congress.

Rep. James originally introduced this legislation in 2023. Now, as Congress takes up tax reforms, Rep. James is vigorously advocating for this commonsense proposal that will greatly benefit families, first responders, healthcare workers, and many more in Michigan and across the nation.

The bill outlines four categories of qualifying “critical employees,” including healthcare professionals, law enforcement officers, first responders, and caretakers. Individuals must work full-time for at least 75% of the taxable year in a job located in an opportunity zone. The bill would also offer as much as $4,500 in tax credits per child.

Rep. James issued the following statement regarding this legislation:

“There is a hopelessness epidemic in America. We must reignite hope in our country for those who bring so much hope to our communities: nurses and care workers, public safety officials, and parents. These local heroes are the foundation of our society, and the Reignite Hope Act will address the basic needs for these individuals by giving them the tools and resources to improve their lives and conditions. These practical steps will offer a lifeline to families, improve public safety, help solve our labor shortage, and address the hopelessness epidemic in this country. With the new Republican trifecta, we should prioritize this policy to make a meaningful impact on the lives of Michiganders and Americans everywhere.”

Rep. Ciscomani also issued the following statement regarding the Reignite Hope Act:

“When we invest in our healthcare professionals, law enforcement officers, first responders, and caretakers, we strengthen our entire community and country,” said Ciscomani. “Proud to join Rep. James in this commonsense effort to incentivize growth, bolster economic opportunities, and provide much-needed financial stability to our critical employees and their families.”
