Congressman John James Votes to Avert Debt Default

Contact: Madeline Peltzer

Congressman John James voted in favor of the Fiscal Responsibility Act (FRA) today. The FRA will be the largest deficit reduction bill in history. The resolution cuts more than $2 trillion in government spending and rejects all of Biden’s $5 trillion proposed new tax hikes.

The FRA will help lift more Americans out of poverty by encouraging able-bodied adults without dependents to return to work, returning $29 billion in unobligated and unspent COVID-19 funds to the taxpayers, and unleashing the economy through common-sense and science-based regulatory reform.

“America doesn’t have a revenue problem; it has a spending problem. I voted for the FRA because it cuts over two trillion dollars in government spending – the largest deficit reduction bill in history – without touching Social Security, Medicare, national defense, and critical veterans’ programs,” James said. “It is easier to gripe than to govern. A default would have decimated our retirement savings and our economy. While I can’t let that happen, I pledge that this only the first step in a return to fiscal responsibility in Washington.”

The first piece of legislation Rep. James introduced explicitly shielded Social Security and Medicare from debt ceiling negotiations and was included in the FRA. The Congressman has also made investing in our national defense, particularly Selfridge Air National Guard Base located in his district, a top priority for his office. Finally, as a veteran and the son of a Vietnam veteran, he has been adamant about keeping our promises to our nation’s veterans. Contrary to Democrat lies, the FRA fully funds the VA.

The House approved H.R. 3746, Fiscal Responsibility Act, by a vote of 314 to 117.
